What a motel is in Portugal

Unlike the American motel, a roadside hotel, the Portuguese motel is lodging for couples, by periods (two, four, twelve hours) or by night, entered through a garage without passing a visible reception. It is licensed as accommodation, and it is perfectly legal.

How entry works

You arrive by car, drive into the suite's garage or an inside car park, and the gate closes. Payment is through a hatch, a terminal or, in the newest motels, a touchscreen where you pick the suite and the time without speaking to anyone (Motel Portofino, in Matosinhos, is the example). People arriving on foot or by taxi get in too; ask the house.

What is in a suite

  • Simple: a large bed, bathroom, TV, air conditioning, mirrors. Between 25 and 50 euros per period.
  • With hydromassage or jacuzzi: the most common category, between 50 and 90 euros.
  • Themed or luxury: round bed, pole, erotic chair, steam room, sauna, private pool. Between 90 and 600 euros, depending on the house and the time.

Almost all have room service (drinks, meals, chocolates, flowers) and many sell condoms, lubricants and toys. The newer design motels (H2ON in Loures, Afrodite MTL in Viana, Terra Cálida in Viseu, Motel Seven in Seixal) treat the suite like a boutique hotel.

How long

The best-selling period is four hours. You can stay the whole night at many motels, with morning check-out, at a price that competes with a three-star hotel. Some offer packages for birthdays and Valentine's, with champagne and breakfast.

How to choose

Start with the motels page, filter by city and compare each house's price list; many publish prices online. Greater Lisbon's reference motels are in Loures, Sintra, Trafaria and Montijo; Greater Porto's in Matosinhos, Gaia, Valongo and Gondomar. Book where you can; elsewhere, call to ask if a suite is free, especially on Friday and Saturday.

Frequently asked questions

Are motels legal in Portugal?

Yes. They are licensed lodgings, open to adults over 18, by periods of hours or by night. The discreet entrance is a service to the customer, not a sign of illegality.

How much is a motel for 4 hours?

Between 35 and 70 euros in a simple or hydromassage suite; themed and pool suites run from 90 to 600. Prices rise on Friday and Saturday at some houses.

Do you need to book?

Not compulsory, but advisable at weekends. Several motels (D'Lirius Azuis, Portofino, Afrodite MTL, Habana) have bookings and availability online.

Can I get to a motel on foot or by taxi?

Yes. Garage entry is the rule, but anyone arriving on foot comes in through the service door or is met by a member of staff. Call ahead if in doubt.
