Motels in Portugal

48 places

Portuguese motels are lodgings for couples, rented by the hour rather than by the night: discreet entry, often through a garage, themed suites with jacuzzi, mirrors, round bed, private pool in the pricier ones, and contactless room service. There are more than fifty in the country, almost all on the edge of cities and by main roads.

They are licensed lodgings. You pay by the hour or by package, and many take online bookings.

How it works

You arrive by car, drive into the suite's garage, close the door and the stay begins. Payment is by intercom or a cash box, and room service arrives through a hatch. In the newer motels you book on the website, choosing suite and period.

Typical periods are 2, 4, 6 or 12 hours, or the whole night. Suites range from simple to luxury, with jacuzzi, sauna, indoor pool, erotic chairs and ambient sound.

Prices

Between 30 and 60 euros for a 2 to 4 hour period in a standard suite; 80 to 200 euros for pool suites or overnight packages with champagne. Weekends and Valentine's Day fill up: book.

Who they are for

Couples of all ages, travellers who want privacy, anyone celebrating a date. Motels do not admit minors and many ask for ID from both guests.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a motel cost in Portugal?

Between 30 and 60 euros for 2 to 4 hours in a standard suite, and 80 to 200 euros for luxury pool suites or overnight packages. Prices are on each motel's website.

Are motels discreet?

Yes, that is their whole point. Entry through the suite's garage, contactless payment and room service through a hatch. Nobody sees who comes in.

Do I need to book?

On weekdays usually not. At weekends and on dates like Valentine's Day, yes. Many motels take online bookings.

Can I stay the whole night?

Yes. Almost all have an overnight package, with late-afternoon check-in and morning check-out, and some include breakfast.
