Boudoir photography: what it is, what it costs and how to prepare for a session
Boudoir photography is the intimate, elegant portrait, in lingerie or with little clothing, without explicit nudity, made for the person photographed and nobody else. Portugal has dedicated studios and photographers who shoot at home or in a hotel. This article explains how it works and how to prepare for a session.

What it is
A portrait of body and attitude, in a studio or a bedroom, with worked light, pose direction and, almost always, hair and make-up done beforehand. The result is an album, a box of prints or digital files, for the person themselves or as a gift. It is not erotic photography for publishing: it is private by definition.
What it costs
A studio session with production starts at 200 to 250 euros (Je Suis, in Lisbon, from 240) and goes up to 500 or more with album and make-up included. A photographer who comes to your home charges per session and per hour. Group sessions for hen parties are priced per person.
How to choose the photographer
Look at the portfolio: if the published photos show faces, those people gave permission; ask how yours will be handled. Ask who is in the room (just the photographer? an assistant?), where the files are kept and for how long, and whether you can ask for them to be deleted. A serious studio answers everything in writing. The boudoir page lists studios and photographers with a public address or contact.
How to prepare
- Choose two or three pieces you feel good in: lingerie, a man's shirt, a robe, a corset. Nothing that marks the skin; take off tight clothes an hour before.
- Sleep and drink water the day before; avoid alcohol.
- Bring music you like; many studios ask.
- No new skin treatments in the week before.
The day
One to two hours of hair and make-up, two to three of photography. The photographer directs every pose and shows the result on screen; nobody expects you to know how to pose. Selection and editing come later, in a meeting or by email. Say what you do not want to appear: the photographer edits it, or deletes it.
