What a swinger club is

A private club, usually with a bar, dance floor, social areas and reserved areas. It runs on membership or entry paid at the door, for adults over 18. What sets it apart from a nightclub is the central rule: everything is consensual, nothing is compulsory. Walking into a swinger club commits you to nothing; many couples go the first time just to look.

Who can get in

Each club sets its nights: couples' nights, mixed nights with singles, themed nights. As a rule, couples always get in; single men only on set nights, and they pay more; single women are welcome and pay little or nothing. Check the club's website before going, because rules differ from house to house.

What it costs

Entry for a couple runs from 30 to 60 euros, often with drinks included. A single man pays 40 to 80 on nights open to singles. Some clubs have an annual membership card. Inside, drinks are bar-priced.

The rules

  • No means no. Nobody insists. A refusal needs no explanation.
  • Ask before touching. Always, even in reserved areas.
  • No phones in social and reserved areas; most clubs keep them at the door or cover the cameras.
  • Hygiene and condoms: clubs provide condoms, towels and showers. Use them.
  • Discretion: what happens in the club stays in the club. You do not talk about who you saw.

What to bring and how to dress

ID, cash or card, and clothes you feel good in. Many clubs have a dress code on themed nights (lingerie, black, fetish); on ordinary nights, going-out clothes. Arrive after 11pm; the night picks up between 1am and 3am.

Where they are

See the swinger clubs page: Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Valongo, Maia, Coimbra, Santa Maria da Feira and Quarteira, in the Algarve. Each listing has the address, website and a summary of the rules; the list of nights is on each club's website.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to be a couple to get into a swinger club?

Not always. Couples get in on every night; singles, men and women, on set nights, with their own rules and prices. Check the club's website.

Is it compulsory to do anything?

No. The central rule is consent: everything is allowed between those who want it, nothing is compulsory. Many couples go the first time just to see the atmosphere.

How much is entry to a swinger club?

Between 30 and 60 euros per couple, with drinks included at many clubs. Single men pay more, between 40 and 80, on nights open to singles. Single women pay little or nothing.

Are swinger clubs legal in Portugal?

Yes. They are private clubs for adults, licensed as entertainment venues or associations. What is illegal is charging for sexual services, and that does not happen in a swinger club: nobody is paid to be there.
