How a strip club works in Portugal
A strip club is a licensed bar with a show. Anyone who has never been in one imagines the worst or the best; the reality is simpler and has clear rules. This article explains what you pay, what you can and cannot do, and how to tell a serious house from one that is not.

What it is, and what it is not
In Portugal, a strip club is a licensed drinks establishment with a performance licence: a stage with a pole, tables and sofas, a bar, sometimes private rooms for dances by the table. The dancers are hired to dance. There are no sexual services, and a house that offers them is outside the law (procuring is a crime) and outside this guide.
The guide only lists clubs with a public address and a licence, and each listing says when it was verified and how.
What you pay
- Entry: between 10 and 30 euros in the main cities, almost always with a drink included. In the Algarve, in July and August, it can pass 30.
- Drinks: pricier than an ordinary bar. A beer or a glass runs from 8 to 15 euros; champagne bottles are the house's top product and can cost several hundred.
- Private dances: a dance by the table or in a private room is paid separately, per song or per time, usually between 20 and 50 euros. The price is posted or stated beforehand; if it is not, ask.
- Drinks for the dancers: in many houses, buying a dancer a drink is how you get her company at your table for a few minutes. It costs more than your own drink; that is the business model, not a trap, as long as it is said up front.
House rules
They are similar everywhere: no touching the dancers without invitation, no photos or filming, no arriving drunk, no arguing with security. Dress normally; some Lisbon and Porto houses turn away shorts and flip-flops. Women and couples are welcome in most clubs, and several houses run nights designed for them.
Hours
Most open at 10pm or 11pm and close between 4am and 6am. Many close on Sunday or Monday. Arriving at midnight is arriving early; the house fills between 1am and 3am.
How to choose
Start with the verified listings on the strip clubs page. Look at the address (a serious house has a street and a number), at the website or Instagram (with photos of the space, not just of bodies) and at what the house says about itself. If an ad promises "girls" instead of a show, it is not a strip club and it is not here.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to go to a strip club in Portugal?
Yes. Strip clubs are licensed bars with a show, for adults over 18. What is a crime is procuring, that is, profiting from someone else's prostitution; a house offering sexual services is outside the law.
How much does a person spend in a night?
With entry and two drinks, between 30 and 60 euros. With a private dance, another 20 to 50. Ordering champagne at the table runs to several hundred. Prices are posted or stated beforehand; if not, ask.
Can women go in?
In most clubs, yes, alone, in a group or as a couple. Some houses run male striptease nights for a female audience, such as Champanhe Club Feminino in Porto.
Can you take photos?
Almost never. The rule is no photos and no filming, to protect the dancers and other customers. Anyone who does is asked to leave.
