Sex shops in Portugal: street shops, chains and what has changed
There are over seventy sex shops with a public address in the guide, from Viana to Faro and the islands. Some are chains with dozens of shops; others are neighbourhood shops with twenty years behind the counter. This article explains what they sell, what it costs and why the physical shop still beats online at many things.

The chains
- Contranatura, born in Lisbon, with shops in Baixa, Chiado, Setúbal and a head office in the capital; the reference for toys and lingerie.
- Koisas d'Adultos, based in Vila Franca de Xira with shops in Queluz, Cascais, Setúbal, Barreiro and Forte da Casa.
- Fruto Proibido, the north's largest chain, with shops in Porto, Matosinhos, Gaia and Maia, including a warehouse.
- Rapidinha Sex Shop, in Lisbon (Benfica, Parque das Nações), Oeiras and Carnaxide.
- Cupido's Shop, in the Algarve: Faro, Quarteira, Olhão.
The neighbourhood shops
Casa d'Eros and Erosfarma in Porto, Loja do Sexo and LX Sex Shop in Lisbon, Museu Erótico in Almada and Coimbra, Afrodite in Setúbal: shops with a counter and an owner, where you ask and you try (the devices, not the rest).
What they sell
Toys for every body, lubricants and condoms, lingerie and costumes, intimate cosmetics, light fetish accessories, magazines and films (fewer and fewer), and, in some, video booths. Prices are online prices plus ten to twenty per cent; in return, you take it home on the spot and with advice.
Lingerie
The sensual lingerie boutiques (LOLA Wants, PomPom Rouge, Boudoir Vintage Boutique in Lisbon) are fashion shops, not sex shops, and sit in their own category.
Why go to the shop
Because you see the size, feel the material and ask without embarrassment someone who has sold this for twenty years. Because there is no parcel arriving home with the shop's name on the sender. And because good shops exchange what does not fit. The sex shops page lists them by city.
