Gay saunas in Lisbon and Porto: what to expect
Gay saunas are an institution of Lisbon and Porto nightlife, with houses open for decades and a crowd that mixes residents and tourists. This article explains how they work, what they cost and the rules they all share.

What a gay sauna is
An establishment for men, with dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, bar, rest area and private cabins. It runs on paid entry, locker and towel, and is a space for socialising and meeting between consenting adults. It is licensed as a wellness or entertainment establishment, and it is legal.
Some saunas are liberal, open to women and couples on set nights; the guide notes this on the listing.
What it costs
Entry runs from 12 to 25 euros, depending on the house, the day and the hour, with locker and towel included. There are discounts for under-25s or under-30s and multi-entry passes. Drinks are paid separately, at bar prices.
How it works
You go in, pay, get the locker key and a towel. You undress fully and wear the towel (or nothing, in the wet areas). You move around the common areas; cabins lock from inside. Showers, condoms and lubricant are available; use them.
Etiquette
- You ask with a look and a hand; no means no, without explanations.
- No photos, ever. Phones stay in the locker.
- Shower before entering the wet areas.
- Do not drink too much; houses turn away anyone arriving drunk.
Hours and days
Most open mid-afternoon and close between 2am and 6am, with Friday and Saturday nights the busiest. Some open 24 hours at weekends. In Lisbon, the five saunas sit between Bairro Alto, Avenida da Liberdade and Avenidas Novas; in Porto, two are in the Baixa and one in Campanhã. See the saunas page.
Frequently asked questions
Can women go to a gay sauna?
In gay saunas, no. In liberal saunas or on mixed nights at some houses, yes, alone or as a couple; the listing says which.
How much is entry to a sauna?
Between 12 and 25 euros, with locker and towel. There are discounts for younger visitors and multi-entry passes.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just ID and cash or card. The towel is provided; flip-flops are welcome. Condoms and lubricant are available at the house.
Are gay saunas legal in Portugal?
Yes. They are licensed establishments for adults over 18. What is illegal is selling sexual services, and that is not what happens: nobody is paid to be there.
