Portugal for visitors: adult nightlife explained to tourists, from hours to prices

Anyone arriving in Portugal from London, Berlin or Amsterdam finds an adult night that is smaller, later and more discreet than they are used to, and with a different law. This article answers the questions visitors ask most, in order, from the airport to closing time.

What is legal and what is not

Prostitution itself is not a crime in Portugal, but everything around it as a business is: exploiting, promoting or organising someone else's prostitution (procuring) is a crime, so there are no legal brothels and no houses with sexual services. What exists legally are bars and clubs with shows (striptease, cabaret), private adult clubs (swing, fetish), saunas, sex shops, motels and events. Red Hot Guide lists only these. A house offering more is outside the law, and so is the visitor.

Hours

Everything happens late. Strip clubs open at 22:00 or 23:00 and fill up after midnight; they close at 04:00 or 06:00. Swinger clubs open at 22:00 and close at 05:00 or 06:00; saunas open in the afternoon. In Lisbon and Porto the metro stops around 01:00; after that it is a taxi or a ride app, cheap compared with northern Europe. On Sundays and Mondays much is closed.

Prices

Cheaper than London or Paris, pricier than Spain for the same thing. Strip club entry, 10 to 30 euros with a drink; drinks, 8 to 15 euros; a private dance, 20 to 50 euros. Couples at a swinger club, 30 to 60 euros a night. Saunas, 12 to 20 euros. Motels, 25 to 60 euros for two to three hours. These are consumer prices, VAT included, and each listing in the guide says what the venue charges.

How you pay

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but many clubs prefer cash and some take cash only. There are ATMs in every nightlife area. Tipping is neither compulsory nor expected as in the United States; rounding up or leaving a euro or two is welcome.

Age, ID and clothes

Eighteen everywhere, with ID at the door when security asks. In clubs, going-out clothes: no shorts or flip-flops, except in the Algarve in summer. At fetish parties, the announced dress code. In saunas, a towel.

The differences that surprise most

  • There are no window districts or legal red-light streets: that does not exist in Portugal.
  • Clubs are small and discreet; many have no sign.
  • Smoking is outdoors and on terraces; inside, only in dedicated rooms where they exist.
  • Everyone speaks English in tourist areas; in neighbourhood clubs, less so.
  • No means no, and security enforces it.

The guide's listings are in Portuguese and English, with address, map, hours and prices. Start with the city you are in and the "open now" filter.
