Adult nightlife in Porto and Gaia: what is where and how it works
Porto's adult night is smaller than Lisbon's and easier to understand: it concentrates in half a dozen areas, crosses the river to Gaia for the motels and the larger clubs, and hosts the country's biggest erotic fair. This article is the map of that night for a first visit.
Baixa and Cedofeita: the city centre clubs
The strip clubs and show bars of the centre sit between Baixa, Cedofeita and the Aliados area, often on side streets behind a discreet door. They open at 22:00 or 23:00 and close at 04:00 or 05:00, Wednesday to Saturday in most cases; midweek some houses open only with a booking or for groups. The metro stops early (around 01:00); the way back is by taxi.
Boavista and Antas: saunas and shops
Porto's saunas are mostly in Boavista and near the centre, open from the afternoon until the small hours. Street sex shops are in Baixa and Boavista, with shop hours; the national chains have several shops here. Pole dance schools are spread across Boavista, Antas and Paranhos, with classes at the end of the day.
Gaia and Matosinhos: bigger clubs, motels and the fair
Vila Nova de Gaia has the metropolitan area's motels, on the exits to the A1 and A29 motorways, and a few swinger clubs with more space than the centre allows. Matosinhos has shops and the odd club by the sea. Eros Porto, the country's largest erotic fair, takes place every year at Exponor in Matosinhos, with shop stands, shows and talks. All of this needs a car, or a taxi ride of 15 to 25 minutes from the centre.
What it costs
In strip clubs, entry with one drink runs between 15 and 30 euros, with private dances paid separately. In swinger clubs, couples pay between 30 and 60 euros a night with drinks included; single men pay more or are admitted only on certain nights. Saunas charge 15 to 20 euros including towel and locker. Motels run from 25 to 60 euros for a two to three hour period. These are consumer prices, VAT included, and they change: check each venue's listing.
How to plan the night
- Start early with the saunas or the shops, which close before the clubs.
- Book for swinger clubs and group nights, especially on Saturdays.
- Count on a taxi for Gaia and Matosinhos: the metro does not serve the late night.
