Etiquette and consent: the unwritten rules of clubs, saunas and parties

Each kind of house has its rules, and almost none writes them on the door. First-timers fear making a fool of themselves; regulars know the rules are few, the same everywhere and easy to follow. They come down to one: nothing happens without a clear yes.

The rule that applies everywhere

Consent means an explicit yes, given beforehand, that can be withdrawn at any moment. It is not the absence of a no. In a sauna, a swinger club or a party, you ask before touching, accept a no without arguing and do not insist. Whoever ignores this is shown the door, and serious houses do it without hesitation.

Strip clubs

Looking is the show; touching is not. The dancers decide what happens in a private dance and the houses have security watching. No photos and no filming, ever. Nothing is negotiated beyond what the house offers: an offer of a sexual service is illegal for whoever makes it and for the house, and a house that allows it is not a strip club but something else.

Swinger clubs and liberal saunas

You come in and say hello. You do not approach a couple without first exchanging a look and a sign that conversation is welcome. In the play areas you always ask, in words, whether you may join or touch; a "no, thank you" closes the matter. Towel in the wet area, clothes or lingerie in the social rooms, according to the night's dress code. Phones stay in the locker. Whoever drinks too much leaves.

Gay saunas

Similar rules: towel, locker, hygiene and a no that is respected. Silence is not a yes. Condoms are available and used. There are dark areas where the rule is the same: hands only with a clear sign they are welcome.

Fetish and BDSM parties

These have the most explicit rules, which makes them the safest places to start. There is a dress code (black, latex, leather, lingerie; street clothes stay out or pay more), there are identified monitors you can ask for help, and any scene is negotiated beforehand, with limits and a safeword. You do not touch anyone or anyone's gear without asking. You do not interrupt a scene, comment on it or photograph it.

Everywhere

  • Phone away. One photo can ruin the night and a house's reputation.
  • Drink with care: whoever loses control is asked to leave.
  • Hygiene: shower first, in houses with a wet area.
  • Money: you pay for what you consume; nobody pays for anyone without agreeing first.
  • Leave when you want, no explanations. A serious house thanks you and asks if all went well.

Legal adult nightlife in Portugal lives by these rules. They are what separates it from what the law punishes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I touch a dancer in a strip club?

No, except what the house and the dancer allow in a private dance, and she decides. Security watches and whoever insists leaves.

Can a single man enter a swinger club?

In many houses only on certain nights, at a higher price, and always with the rule of asking before approaching. A no ends the conversation.

What is a safeword?

A word agreed before a fetish or BDSM scene that, once said, stops everything at once. It is compulsory at serious parties, along with monitors you can ask for help.
