Stag and hen parties in the Algarve: Albufeira, Vilamoura and what is legal
Every year the Algarve hosts thousands of stag and hen parties, Portuguese and foreign, mostly in Albufeira and Vilamoura. It is an industry with organisers, bars set up for groups and strip clubs running all summer. It is also where most parties go wrong, through excess and not knowing the rules. This article says what exists, what it costs and what the law allows.
Where
Albufeira, around the Oura strip and the old town, is the stag and hen capital: bars with group programmes, strip clubs open every summer night, hotels used to it. Vilamoura is pricier and more restrained, with the clubs around the marina and the hotels. Portimão and Praia da Rocha have bars and the odd club. Faro and Lagos take smaller groups and quieter nights.
What you book
Party organisers sell packages: transport, dinner, club entry, daytime activities (boat, karting, beach) and a private striptease show at the hotel or a villa, with professional performers hired by the company. In Portugal this is legal as a show: the performer dances and leaves. Any sexual service is illegal, for whoever offers it and whoever organises it, and a serious organiser refuses.
What it costs
A night package with dinner, transport and a club runs between 60 and 120 euros per person. A private striptease show, 150 to 300 euros per performer per half hour. Strip club entry with one drink is around 15 to 30 euros; bottles at the table are what make the bill grow, and in a group of ten the temptation is strong. Consumer prices, VAT included, higher in July and August.
The rules that keep you out of trouble
- No sexual services and no propositions: it is a crime and serious houses throw out whoever insists.
- No photos inside the clubs.
- Drink with care: Albufeira's police have no patience for groups out of control, and fines and nights at the station do happen.
- Respect for the people working: dancers, staff, drivers. Those treated well treat you well.
- Book ahead in July and August: clubs sell out for groups.
