Staying safe on a night out: payments, drinks, photos and how to leave a place you do not like
Legal adult nightlife in Portugal is, in most cases, safer than an ordinary nightclub: controlled entry, security, small crowds, clear rules. The problems that do exist are almost always of two kinds, a bill that grows and a drink that is left out of sight. This article is a short list of what to do so the night ends well.

Before going out
Check the venue's listing in the guide and the house website: hours, prices, rules. A house that does not say what it charges is the first that will overcharge. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. Take cash for the entry and two or three drinks, and a card for the rest; leave what you do not need at home.
Paying without surprises
Ask the price of everything before ordering, including the drink you are invited to buy for someone. Pay each round instead of opening a tab. Ask for the receipt. Do not leave your card on the counter or hand it to anyone. If the bill includes things you did not order, say so calmly and ask for the breakdown; a serious house corrects it. If it does not, pay what you consumed, keep the bill and file a complaint in the Complaints Book, which every house is required to have.
Your drink
Keep your glass in sight and do not accept drinks you did not see poured. Alternate with water. If you suddenly feel unwell, out of proportion to what you drank, leave with someone you trust and ask for help: security, a friend, 112.
Privacy
Do not photograph or film, and do not let yourself be filmed; serious houses ban phones in the rooms and remove whoever uses them. Pay cash if you do not want the house name on your statement. Do not give your real name to anyone who does not need it.
Recognising a serious house
Controlled entry and visible security, prices in writing, rules explained at the door, clean toilets, staff who answer questions without rushing. And the opposite: pushing bottles, promises of "more" for money, doors that close, nobody saying what things cost. Any offer of a sexual service is a sign the house is outside the law; leave.
Leaving
You can leave whenever you want, no explanations. Ask for the bill, pay what you consumed and go. If anyone tries to stop you, call security or 112. Outside, a taxi or a ride app; in Lisbon and Porto there are always cars at the door of the nightlife areas.
The rule is simple: a house that respects the law respects the customer. Those in the guide meet the first part; the second, tell us.
Frequently asked questions
What do I do if the bill is wrong?
Ask for the breakdown calmly. If the house does not correct it, pay what you consumed, keep the bill and file a complaint in the Complaints Book, compulsory in every establishment, or online at livroreclamacoes.pt.
Can I take photos inside a club?
Almost never. Serious houses ban phones in the rooms to protect performers and customers, and remove whoever uses them.
How do I know a house is legal?
Controlled entry, prices in writing, clear rules and no offer of sexual services. Such an offer is a sign the house is outside the law: leave. The guide lists only legal venues.
