Liberal saunas and couples' clubs: how they work, dress code and what to bring

Between the traditional sauna and the swinger club there is a space that in Portugal is called a liberal sauna or couples' club: wet area, bar, lounges and rooms, for couples and women, with single men on certain nights. It is where many couples start, because water and a towel take the ceremony out of it. This article explains what goes on there, with no promises.

What it is, and what it is not

A liberal sauna is a private club licensed as a bar and leisure space, with sauna, steam room, jacuzzi or pool, a bar and private or social rooms. It is not an establishment for sexual services: nobody is paid to be with anyone, and a house that does so is outside the law. What happens between guests is between adults who chose each other.

Who gets in and when

Most houses admit couples and women on every day they open and single men on set nights or hours, at a higher price. There are themed nights (couples only, masks, lingerie) announced on the website and in the guide's events. In Portugal these houses are mostly in Lisbon, Porto and around, the Algarve and a few mid-sized cities.

The first night

You arrive, pay the entry (couples between 30 and 60 euros, soft drinks included; consumer prices, VAT included), and receive a towel and a locker key. You wear what the night's dress code asks, almost always a towel in the wet area and lingerie or light clothes in the lounges. First the bar and conversation; the wet area is the easiest place to meet people, because everyone is dressed the same. Nothing happens without a clear yes, and a couple can spend the whole night just watching and talking. Many do exactly that the first time.

What to bring

  • Flip-flops, if you do not like the house ones.
  • Lingerie or light clothes for the lounges, according to the dress code.
  • Cash or card for the bar; some houses take cash only.
  • No phone outside the locker.
  • Condoms are available; bringing your own is always a good idea.

How to choose the house

Look at the website and the listing in the guide: clear hours, prices shown, written rules, photographs of the space. A house that does not say what it charges or promises more than the space is a warning sign. Call before the first visit and ask whatever you like; the answer says a lot about the house.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a liberal sauna and a swinger club?

The liberal sauna has a wet area (sauna, steam room, jacuzzi) and runs on towels; the swinger club is a nightclub with a dance floor, bar and rooms, in clothes. In practice they blend, and many houses are both.

Does a couple have to take part?

No. You can spend the night talking and watching. Nobody approaches without asking and a no ends the conversation. Many couples make their first visit just to observe.

How much is entry?

For couples, between 30 and 60 euros a night with soft drinks included; single women little or nothing; single men 50 to 80 euros, on certain nights only. Consumer prices, VAT included, varying from house to house.
