Adult nightlife in Lisbon by area: Cais do Sodré, Bairro Alto, Avenidas Novas and Parque das Nações

Lisbon has more venues in the guide than any other city, and they are not all in the same place. Visitors look in Bairro Alto and find little; locals know the adult night spreads from Avenidas Novas to Cais do Sodré, with the motels on the way out of town. This article sorts the city by area, so you can choose your night by geography rather than by chance.

Avenidas Novas and Picoas: the classic clubs

The area between Marquês de Pombal, Saldanha and Campo Pequeno holds several of the city's oldest strip clubs. They are discreet houses, many in basements or first floors, reached by a lift or a door with no large sign. They open around 22:00 and close between 04:00 and 06:00, Monday to Saturday; almost all close on Sunday. Street parking is easy after 20:00 and the metro runs until about 01:00 (yellow and red lines); after that it is a taxi or a ride app.

Cais do Sodré and Santos: bars, shows and the Pink Street

Cais do Sodré is the busiest part of Lisbon's night and has a few show bars and cabaret, plus themed parties in larger clubs. Do not expect the discretion of Avenidas Novas here: this is street nightlife, with queues, loud music and crowds until 06:00. The strip bars that once existed here have nearly all closed; what remains are show houses and bars with a burlesque programme.

Príncipe Real, Bairro Alto and Chiado: saunas, shops and schools

Príncipe Real is the centre of Lisbon's gay night, and that is where several saunas and bars are, in the surrounding streets. The saunas open in the afternoon and close in the small hours, some with longer hours at weekends. Chiado and Baixa have the best located sex shops and lingerie shops, with shop hours (10:00 to 20:00, some later). Pole dance schools are spread across the whole city, with classes in the morning and late afternoon.

Parque das Nações, Benfica and Alvalade: what the city tucked into its neighbourhoods

Some sex shops and studios sit away from the centre, in residential areas or next to shopping centres: Parque das Nações, Benfica, Alvalade, Lumiar. Parking is easy and traffic light, but there is little going on around them at night. Good choices for shopping and classes, not for a night out.

The motels: on the way out, never in the centre

There are no motels in Lisbon proper. They are on the exits from the city and in the surrounding municipalities: Loures, Odivelas, Sintra, the south bank (Almada, Seixal) and the Cascais line. Almost all have garage entry, booking by phone or website and payment on arrival. Go by car: that is how they were designed.

How to pick your night

  • For a strip club with little exposure, Avenidas Novas.
  • For a street night with a show, Cais do Sodré.
  • For saunas and gay bars, Príncipe Real.
  • For shopping and classes, Chiado, Baixa and the neighbourhoods.
  • For a room for two, any motel on the exits, by car.

Every venue in the guide for Lisbon is on the city page, with a map, a category filter and what is open right now.
